The Shop
Lovers of good design may experience sensory overload when entering this small storefront just off U.S. 1 in Fort Lauderdale. The place is packed with retro cool furnishings: Scandinavian streamlined side tables, art deco ashtrays and mod plastic fantastic lamps.

The Style
Space Modern specializes in vintage designer furniture from the 1930s to the 1970s. The owners have an impeccable eye for outstanding design and only deal with top quality merchandise. Pieces are grouped together to form mini vignettes of living areas in various styles. Streamlined black leather and chrome recliners surround a cocktail cart covered with art deco curves. A Danish bentwood pendant lamp hangs above low slung chairs and a curved glass coffee table topped with colorful hand blown vases. Sleek Italian floor lamps arch above Lucite benches and a molded white fiberglass sofa, set with fuzzy blue cushions.

The Scene
This is a place that keeps on giving. Walk into the front showroom, where the "big items" and soothing sounds of easy listening reside. Then, meander back to the outdoor courtyard to check out a variety of water plants and planters, a gazebo and the sights and sounds of nature. Finally, head into the converted 1950s bungalow to find four rooms filled with unique gift items. And, if you're hoping to create the perfect yard, but need a little help, custom design services for yards, gardens and balconies are available.

The Goods
Ever smell dirt-scented bath salts? How about a tomato candle? You can here, along with what seems like a million other home and garden-related items. The real conversation pieces are the large granite fountains, sculpted wood items and sleek metal patio pieces. The selection ranges from a $2 ornamental tree frog to a $5,000 fountain. If you can't find what you want, Atlantic Yard does custom work as well.

Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop
3295 W. Sunrise Boulevard
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311-5603
Phone (954) 791-7927
This is the mother of all flea markets. The second largest tourist attraction in the entire state of Florida, the Swap Shop gets over 12 million visitors a year. What do they come for? Bargains, bargains, and more bargains. The 88 acres of the Swap Shop contain stand after stand of items you never knew you needed, from antique salt and pepper shakers to headless Barbie dolls. There's a huge covered section for new merchandise, an even larger open-air section for used goods (where you'll find the best deals), and a large building containing permanent shops, a food court, and a daily circus. The best time to hit the flea market is early fall and winter, when the snowbirds come down to Florida and set up shop to sell the trinkets they've gathered through the years. The worst time? Easy -- June through August when the heat and frequent rain make outdoor shopping a nightmare.--Jennifer Osorio

Elements on Las Olas
A charming space, knowledgeable staff and an abundance of unique merchandise make for a shopping experience from heaven.
1034 E Las Olas Blvd
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301-2314
Phone (954) 525-5754
The Scene
Beware. Once inside this Las Olas Boulevard gem, you may not emerge for hours. Why? Because Elements packs a ton of cool "stuff" into its small space. Every time you turn around there's some new treasure to discover. It can get crowded, but brave the crowds--it's worth it.

The Goods
A little bit of everything. Expect to find anything from ceramic lizards to designer pet treats. Baby items, bar ware, candles and aromatherapy potions are displayed enticingly. Perfume bottles, paperweights and picture frames mix it up with handmade journals and teddy bears, all scattered on a variety of furniture, also for sale. Items range in price from $5 to $5,000. There's a coffee bar in the back, and for good customers, the cappuccino is on the house.
